To be able to play any song by ear and improvisation, first you must master the two most important things that make up a song. Those two things are a song’s MELODY and CHORDS.

Melody and chords are pretty much a combination of many intervals based on particular scales and arpeggios a song decides to use.

However, 98% of students run away when they hear that they need to practice scales and arpeggios… so what do I do?

I teach them how melody and chords work through actual popular songs, verbally and visually deconstructing the songs structure into sections, parts, and all melody and chords down to their individual notes and separate hands.

There are many benefits to practicing the melody and chords methods in my lessons. The more songs you learn; the more you can predict a melody by ear, the more you could recognize similar chord patterns in songs.

Song after song you learn in the library without realizing you are actually memorizing more and more chords and scales into your musical dictionary because songs are a lot more fun to learn than boring textbook theory and jargon!

Remember, any mastery only comes with practice, but most traditional piano students loses the motivation to practice because they hate what they are playing. That is why on YouTube and in my courses I always integrate modern popular songs of all genres and languages ranging from top hits, to video game music, even to meme music… so students stay motivated to practice and grow.
