Part 2: RAUN MELMED, MD: “A Pediatrician’s Perspective”
Raun D. Melmed is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician and Director of the Melmed Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is also co-founder and Medical Director of the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center, and Adjunct Senior Researcher at the Translational Genomics Institute in Phoenix. Dr. Melmed has established physician-training programs for the early identification of infants and toddlers with autism and other developmental and behavioral concerns. He is currently investigating the genetics and phenotypes of autism, as well as the use of novel therapeutic agents in the treatment of ADHD and autism.
Participants will learn to:
- Identify the goals of early intervention
- Recognize disorders that may mimic ASD
- Explain how ASD affects socialization
- Utilize behavior as communication
- Implement approaches, treatments, and therapies
- Identify medical/nutritional challenges
Part 3: SEAN BARRON
Co-Author with Temple Grandin of Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships
In his compelling presentation, Sean Barron tells the story of how he went from being a child with low-functioning autism to the successful man, journalist, and boyfriend he is today. When Sean was young, he felt alone, isolated from others. But over time, he learned many social “unwritten rules” that have helped him become more connected with society, resulting in renewed personal relationships. A graduate of Youngstown State University, Sean is currently working as a reporter for the Youngstown Vindicator.
Participants will learn to:
- Apply the 10 unwritten rules of social relationships
- Tell the difference between situation-based and people-based social rules
- Apply effective strategies which Sean’s parents and educators taught him about social conventions such as honesty, manners, and dealing with making mistakes
