In 2003, after earning his black belt under Jean-Jacques Machado, Eddie Bravo opened his 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu school in Los Angeles, California. Bravo’s system emphasizes developing students for submission-only fighting competition rather than points, it focused its jiu-jitsu training without the traditional gi, becoming one of the first jiu-jitsu schools to do so. The idea behind it was to try to implement as many techniques as possible in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions. Bravo worked for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) during this period and felt that high-level jiu-jitsu practitioners were not earning as much as they should have, mainly attributing this to them wearing a gi when training jiu-jitsu but competing in MMA without him. [4]10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu has been controversial since its inception; [5] the abandonment of the gi has generated some backlash from other Jiu-Jitsu schools, [6] and there has been debate about how much 10th Planet’s techniques, most notably their iterations of the rubber guard, translate to MMA. [7] In addition to the original 10th Planet headquarters in Los Angeles, there are over 100 schools worldwide. [8] Some are established Jiu-Jitsu training establishments that have embraced the system as an expansion of the art. The style spread overseas to Ireland, the United Kingdom, [9] Germany, [10] Sweden, Australia, [11] and Korea.
