Description
Hojojutsu, or Nawajutsu, is the traditional Japanese martial art of restraining a person using a cable or rope. Encompassing diverse materials, techniques and methods from many different schools, Hojojutsu is an essentially Japanese art that is a unique product of Japanese history and culture.
As a martial arts practice, Hojojutsu is rarely if ever taught on its own, but as part of a curriculum under the umbrella of the study body encompassed by a larger school of bugei (traditional martial arts) or budo, often as a study advanced in jujutsu. Whatever its origin, Hojojutsu techniques and methods are rarely demonstrated outside of Japan and, unlike its cousin Shibari (Japanese erotic bondage), there are many who consider it a dying art.

Description: A study guide on the traditional Japanese art of bookbinding (hojojutsu) as well as “modernized” options for using old-fashioned equipment in police work today.
術縄術 Hojёutsu is a medieval Japanese martial art of tying a prisoner with a rope. These skills were owned by warriors who performed police duties. The word “hojojutsu” consists of three parts: “ho” (this hieroglyph also reads “tori”), which means “grab”, “bind”, “seize”, “jo” (hieroglyph also reads “nava”) – “ rope” and, of course, “jutsu” – “art”, “skill”. Thus, the hieroglyphs that make up the word “jojutsu” can be read as “torinadjutsu”.
In the first film, Don Angier examines the history, types of strings, ways of tying, occult use, and methods of creating a quick loop (hayanava); then the main binding methods are considered, based on various tasks.
In the second film, after a short repetition of the foundations, complicated methods of binding are given, as well as adaptation of ancient forms of binding to modern conditions, based on police tasks: for example, using a metal carbine on a rope to bind and control control with various shackle methods.
Today, these two films are the most comprehensive video on the art of jojojutsu in English.
