In the early 1900s, the legendary Gracie family invented Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a ground-fighting martial art, with influences from judo and wrestling, that focuses on clashes and locks.
In the early 1990s, the Gracies proved to the world that their Jiu Jitsu style was the most effective martial art in the world, defeating all other styles in a fight without rules.
Now, meet Eddie Bravo, a man who became famous for his Jiu Jitsu style. He was the first Jiu Jitsu fighter in the world to master the “twist the spine, give the neck a twist” torture hold called “The Twister”. This move was later banned by the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation.
Even with his signature banned, Eddie won the ADCC trials and won the “Most Technical Fighter of the Night” award, earning him a spot at the 2003 Abu Dhabi Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The Abu Dhabi Championship is the largest and most prestigious Jiu Jitsu tournament in the world, where Royler Gracie, son of the legendary Helio Gracie (the inventor of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), dominates every year. That is, until he found “The Twister”.
