How to Be Spiritual While Changing Dirty DiapersBeing a mom is one of the highest callings one can be fortunate enough to undertake in a lifetime. Daily tests of will, strength of character, patience, willingness to grow and make room for more and more love are only some of the highlights! When viewed through the lens of spirituality, it is one of the greatest opportunities to expand your consciousness, live with mindfulness and devote much of your daily life to service. Add a big dose of practicality in there with a decent serving of humor – it’s the most rewarding, fun and filled with surprises journey a woman (or any parent or caretaker) can take. In this class, we will explore some of the opportunities that everyday motherhood gives us to connect with our spirit or guru within, find joy in selfless service, let go into the pure flow of life as well as the importance of self care and finding your support system. It’s one crazy ride from the 2am feedings to the “through the diaper, up the back and onto the car seat” poo blowouts. As Ram Dass says, “It’s all grist for the mill” and when we look at this important role we have been given to play in that way, every moment becomes a chance to live from your heart, tapping into unseen potentials for service and love (even on no sleep). The Top 10 Big Ideas
1 Carpe Diem! (They Are Napping!)
It becomes clear very quickly that those long lingering hours you once spent pondering what you wanted to manifest in your life disappear. Literally. Upon entering into the realm of parenthood, the super power of laser sharp focus is offered to you. You will be amazed at what once took you half the day, can now only take you 15 minutes. Seize the day (or the moment!)
2 Be One With the Dirty Diaper
2am diaper changes won’t last forever and once they are over, you will talk about them forever. Those late night times with your babe, while the world is sleeping, is some of the most magical and special times you will have with your little one. Instead of grumping your way to the changing table, embrace the wet wipes.
3 Taper the Technology
Let’s face it, technology is here to stay. It’s how we are able to connect and share right here and now with this online class! Children need to know nature, art, music and play before they know about their favorite apps. Understanding your own attachment to the Twitter feed can help you introduce technology to your child when the time is right.
4 Breastfeeding… A Spiritual Discipline?
Ponder this… It’s taken you years to really commit to your meditation cushion for 20 minutes each day (if that…) and now that your bundle of joy has arrived, you find yourself in an oxytocin induced blissful state every two hours around the clock. Your stamina, focus, presence and attention are put to the test with the real challenge coming after the feed – the big burp. It’s no joke! Your meditation cushion looks more like a magical flying carpet now (rather than a bed of nails!).
5 Nurture the Nurturer
Self care is more important than ever! It’s hard to channel your inner mommy goddess when you have not showered in three days. Wash your hair, put a little mascara on (for Gods sake!) and taste the rainbow. While looks aren’t everything (and your baby sure doesn’t care) it really makes you feel like a million bucks when you can say your teeth are as sparkly shiney as your soul.
6 Time As You Know It… (Ends.)
Monday – Friday, weekends lazing on the couch, day and night – your baby doesn’t really give a damn! At first, this can be difficult to adjust to (one of the most challenging transitions into motherhood!) but after a while, it can actually feel strangely freeing! Time is manmade. To be timeless connects us with an endless and infinite mystery.
7 A Balancing Act of Change
Just when you think you have it all figured out, be it your child’s preferred time to nap or eat or that they are indeed a morning person, you will wake up to a grumpy baby, and your “schedule” turned up on its head. As adults, we may tend to feel we are more static and not changing as much, but in fact, we are. Babies and children, as we are witness to them growing and evolving, remind us that the only thing that is truly constant, is change.
8“It Goes So Fast…” or Does It?
Life goes as fast as you will let it. Raising a child gives us an unbelievable gift to foster more presence in our own lives. When you live each day with presence, you don’t feel as though you as missing out. Time flies when you are never really present to what is unfolding right in front of you.
9 Find Your Tribe
This could be one of the most important of the Big 10 to being a practical, spiritual mommy. Having a group of other like-minded moms can be the light at the end of a rough and tumble day.
10 Serving the Guru
While our true teacher lives within our own heart – our children offer us a very special chance to truly be of service to another being. Selfless service, or seva in Sanskrit is one of the many paths to enlightenment.
