An archetype is a repository of collective wisdom. This is the oldest and most powerful understanding ‘archetype’ as an organizing principle. In indigenous cultures, an archetype was a visual, memetic tool created to help people remember the ways of the world and how to maintain an empowered relationship to life. Today, we may study the Tarot or reflect on the archetypes defined by Jung as ways of explaining our condition or gaining hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel, but in fact our modern values and choices are more deeply influenced by age-old archetypes than we realize.

Archetypes are not fixed entities. They are always evolving, just as consciousness is always evolving. As we grow and learn as a species, whether we realize it or not, our new knowledge is converging into new archetypal repositories which we need to recognize and access. When we limit ourselves to the already-known, we limit our capacity for discovery and innovation. When we don’t realize that there is something beyond our historical archetypes, we continue to define ourselves by our history and remain blind to one of the greatest tools we have for human evolution – emerging archetypal repositories of new human wisdom.
