I appreciate how the author takes us through a bit of the neuroscience of habit formation so the reader understands how they got there in the first place (spoiler alert: it’s not a character flaw!). It then offers simple practices that can be done right in the moment to pause, and replace what’s unwanted with what’s desired. At the same time, this is not a cold, mechanical set of instructions. You’ll find a healthy dose of compassion and humor in the form of anecdotes from the author’s own life and from others who’ve had similar struggles. I’d recommend this book to anyone – no prior mindfulness or meditation experience is necessary to get started right away. Good luck!5.0 out of 5 stars How mindfulness can end bad habitsBy Luis A. Morales, MSW, LICSW on February 26, 2016The Here And Now Habit is not just another book on dealing with unwanted habits, whatever they may be. It is not just self-help book you buy at the bookstore when you are in despair, when nothing else seems to make sense. This book clearly explains how mindfulness works and how it can be used to end unwanted habits. It also mentions scientific studies of changes in the brain resulting from mindfulness. See page 35, where Hugh talks about how mindfulness changes the brain neuroplasticity; and page 40, where he talks about mindfulness and smoke cessation. Who would have thought that mindfulness, the simple and yet difficult act of being present with your own experience, could be a key to getting rid of unwanted patterns of behavior that may keep you from developing your full potential.Hugh begins his book by explaining habits, how they get established, and how difficult it is to change them once they become part of our lives. Then he proposes mindfulness as a way to change unwanted habits. Hugh proceeds to explain mindfulness; how it evolved and how even though it was developed within the Buddhist tradition, it’s a universal quality of present moment awareness that can be experienced and cultivated independently of any particular religion or philosophy. According to Buddhist tradition, craving is the cause of suffering; human suffering arises from wanting more of what we like and less of what we don’t like. Mindfulness is one element the Buddha proposes to end suffering. Hugh stresses the cultivation of mindfulness: being present in the here and now, and being aware of thought patterns as a way to understand habits and to address the underlying urges and triggers of habitual behaviors. Only by understanding who we are can we really begin to ride the waves of emotions, urges and cravings and thus overcome unwanted habits.Throughout this book there are 12 practices that provide the reader a journey of mindfulness. This mindfulness journey may or may not be for you, but you will never know until you try. More than anything, this book is an invitation to take that journey, of making mindfulness your default habit.5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book for People who like Meditation and MindfullnessBy Celia on March 1, 2016I found this book a very helpful. It helped that I knew something of mindfulness before I started the book so I could focus more how it could help break habits that are holding you back from obtaining your goals(one of the author’s suggestions is not to call the habits you want to change as being bad). As a was reading the book, I became more aware about how I was sitting(I am currently in physical therapy and need to change some old habits). The book was also helpful in providing techniques of allowing yourself to feel your negative emotions without letting them overwhelm you(which is a worry of mine). Also the author acknowledges that different approaches may work for different people. One shortcoming of the book, is that it does not deal with developing positive and helpful habits which is the flip side of negative habits. Another shortcoming is that it goes into too deeply the Buddhist philosophy for what is a self-help book. However, the book does have many good ideas. It may be more appealing to people who are know about Mindfulness and are looking for ways of discarding certain habits.I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend The Here and Now Habit for anyone interested in …By Ann Herington on February 21, 2016I highly recommend The Here and Now Habit for anyone interested in putting mindfulness to work for them in creating a healthier, happier life. The book is rich with practical tools, real life stories of the benefits of applied mindfulness, and enough “theory” to hold it all together. Written in a very clean and accessible style, the book could be helpful both to those brand new to mindfulness and also those who are experienced mindfulness practitioners who would like a refresher and an effective application to the arena of habits. While breaking unhealthy habits is never easy, mindfulness practices seem to be the way to go. Without weighting the book down, Hugh Byrne shares much research supporting the effectiveness of mindfulness and helps the reader understand its application to breaking difficult habits. I love that Hugh closes the book with the topic of habitual suffering in the wider world. And I appreciate that he shares Peggy McIntosh’s work on privilege, still so relevant after all these years.Hugh’s breadth of knowledge and experience is vast and he shares himself generously. Many thanks for this gift from the heart.5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on mindfulness and meditation I’ve read yet! Get this book if you want a practical guide to meditation that works!By scot reese on February 23, 2016The Here and Now Habit is an enlightening guide for anyone who wants a release from their minds constant chatter, experience difficult emotions without being overwhelmed, and cultivate calmness and clarity. This is a big order – but Hugh Byrne does this with a practical ‘how to’ on meditation and mindfulness. I’ve read a lot of books on meditation – but if you have to read one book – this is it. Hugh has practiced mindfulness for more than twenty-five years and skillfully offers a step-by-step guide on how to bring more peace, acceptance, and ease into your life. What’s wonderfully specific and original about this book is that mindfulness is approached through the habits that we have formed in our lives that are not working for us and have not figured out how to change them. Byrne lays the groundwork for the book by helping us to understand our habits and then through the basics tenets of mindfulness helps us to put his wisdom into our practice. In twelve chapters, Byrne examines our habits that keep us from our full potential, and chapter-by-chapter gives easy to digest instructions on how to break these harmful habits. After reading this book I am discovering how important my meditation practice is and how I can deepen my practice with common sense instructions. Many books I’ve read talk a big talk – but they never get down to the nuts and bolts of how to make clear progress. I am now clear on how to cultivate mindfulness, harness my attention and most importantly for me to cultivate emotions that support well-being and happiness! Isn’t that the goal of everyone?Additionally, the layout of the chapters is wonderful! Byrne states his premise for the lesson – gives stories from real people, gives you a practice/lesson to do and gives a one-page summary at the end of each chapter! In our fast-paced, media crazy world – this book is wonderful with its easy to understand chapters that make you feel like you are accomplishing something with each reading! I came away from the book knowing I finally had a driver’s manual for my life!
