AUCM PRO presented Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine – Part 2 with Jeffrey Yuen on May 21-24, 2021, and the event was documented on July 28, 2021.
Chinese herbal medicine stands out as an intricately powerful modality. The current methods of introducing Chinese herbal medicine have undergone simplification and streamlining, influenced significantly by the Western pharmaceutical model. However, this contrasts with the historical approach to teaching herbal medicine.
In the past, becoming a herbalist demanded a profound understanding of herbs beyond mere categorization or memorization. The initial learning stages focused on developing a comprehensive understanding of herbs. The apprentice’s education involved actively identifying and collecting herbs, paying attention not only to the herbs themselves but also to their surrounding environments. Additionally, the apprentice would consume various botanicals, observing personal reactions.
While knowing each herb intimately was crucial, the apprentice primarily spent their time observing and assisting the master. Initial observations included understanding how herbs interacted in formulations. Just as understanding a person requires observing their interactions with others, various qualities of herbs unfolded through their interactions. The same applied to individuals consuming specific herbal combinations, considering the person as an additional herb influencing the energetic milieu created by the combination. Simultaneously, the apprentice developed skills in herbal preparation (pao zhi).
This year-long program, consisting of 16 sessions, aims to convey herbal medicine in the most traditional manner possible. According to Jeffrey, the purpose of the course is to teach herbs in the traditional way—following the method he himself was taught.
