As We Get To Know Each Other… You Will See That I Am Just An Ordinary Gal Who Created Her Own Luck. So Let’s Talk About Where I Was On March 17th, 2020
That night I was on the cold bedroom floor, curled up in a ball, crying my eyes out.

It was Sunday night.

The entire city of Boston shut down the night before due to COVID.

For me, this meant the fitness studio I trained my clients in was shutting down too.

Just like that, practically overnight, I went from making a healthy $6K-$8K a month being a personal trainer… to making precisely $0.

To make things even worse, I couldn’t apply for unemployment for two months because I was a solopreneur.

Until the government could figure out a way to help people like myself.

To say I was mortified is to say nothing.

You see, unlike most of my American friends, I didn’t have a family close by I could lean on.

I’m an immigrant, and my mom still lives in my hometown, some 4000 miles away from Boston.

And although the entire situation was challenging… I believe this was actually for the best.

You’ll see why in just a second.

Yet at that moment, I felt so alone and so scared, like a 3-year-old lost in an amusement park.

I didn’t know what to do, where to go, and who to ask for help.

That night I cried myself to sleep, hoping this was just a bad dream.

Alas, when I woke up,

Reality Hit Me Like A Ton Of Bricks…
This wasn’t a dream.

And I had to do something about it.

The scariest part of it all was the uncertainty.

Nobody knew how long the world would be shut down.

This meant I couldn’t just rely on credit cards to live indefinitely.

Especially because I was already knee’s deep in debt and school loans.

For three days, I went into a dark state of mind.

I could feel myself sinking in into the dark hole.

Yet deep down, I knew couldn’t afford to do that.

I can’t explain to you what exactly pulled me out of bed.

But I knew, I couldn’t rely on the government to take care of me.

I had to do it myself.

At first, I thought I’d switch to online fitness training.

Yet, if I’m 100% honest with you, deep down, I knew I was burned out.

For 8 years, I woke up at 4 am to be at the gym by 5 am so I could coach clients every damn day.

I lived on my clients’ terms, I had to accommodate their always-changing schedules and work on the weekends.

I couldn’t travel when I wanted.

I couldn’t even afford to get sick.

Because when I didn’t train people, I wasn’t making money.

So I worked 7 days a week.

Sure, I was making a good income.

But I didn’t have life.

I didn’t have freedom.

And yes, I had fun coaching my clients.

It’s through fitness coaching I’ve met some of the best people in the world, like Rosamund Pike from “Gone Girl.”

Yet.. the longer I coached the more drained I felt.

And if I was going to break free and reach my full-time freedom, I had to figure out something.

Something that would allow me to work from anywhere in the world, from my laptop, while getting paid well.

I also didn’t want to have a corporate job.

The idea of being micromanaged by someone makes me sick to my stomach.

Besides, asking for vacation and waiting for someone to give me their approval is a definition of a nightmare in my books.

The thought of going to the office and sitting there for 8 straight hours is akin to a death sentence.

Yet the best motivator of all…
I Didn’t Want Anyone To Put A Cap On How Much I Could Make, Especially As A Woman…

Freelance Copywriting Was My Golden Ticket To The Full-Time Freedom I Craved With Every Fiber Of My Being
You see…

Because I owned a fitness business before COVID, I had to learn a bit about copywriting.

I’ve listened to a lot of marketing podcasts.

One of my favorite podcasts was and still is “I love marketing” by Joe Polish… who I had the pleasure to meet and connect with not so long ago, thanks to copywriting.

Yet I never seriously committed to studying copywriting.

Besides, I am a non-native speaker.

How could I possibly write words that could make me money, right?

Well, at least that’s what I thought.

Yet still…

I didn’t know how to make it happen, but I was determined.

Losing my fitness business meant I gained time.

So I decided to put this time to good use.

I went online and frantically searched every corner of the interweb about copywriting.

I joined FB groups, read books, and watched youtube videos.

There was SO much information.

At times it felt like I was choking on it.

Yet I followed everything I was told to do by the “gurus.”

To start, I did what every novice copywriter would do – I began hand-copying every sales page I could come across.

I bought the books by Gary Halbert.

I found his pieces online, and I hand-copied those.

Yet still, it felt like I was walking in circles.

Eventually I decided I needed a better road map to success.

So I joined a mastermind.

I didn’t have money, I used a credit card.

I can’t say I was walked by the hand and was told everything I needed to do.

Not at all.

It was a group coaching program.

I was one of many.

Yet I FELT like I had a bit of guidance.

So I kept cranking with the program.

I watched every training, I attended every call.

And I wrote dozens of emails every single day.

Yet…

The progress moved slower than a turtle.

What’s more, I couldn’t land clients.

I’ve sent out hundreds of cold emails.

Attacked fitness influencers on Instagram with DMs…

And I hated it every step of the way.

One day, I was sitting in my room for hours, staring at the screen and the light bulb went off.

I figured if whatever I was doing wasn’t working fast enough, I had to figure out a way to learn to how to write copy faster.

I leaned into the fact I was a non-native speaker.

And I thought to myself, how the hell did I learn English?

One word came to mind: Exposure!

You see,

The Way I Was Taught About Copywriting Wasn’t The Right Way At All
I was reading OF copy.

I was watching training that talked OF copy.

Plus, I was hand-copying 30-40-year-old pieces of copy in a world where even 3 year old know how to type.

I call this the passive way of mastering a copywriting skills.

Instead, I leaned towards the active way.

This included exposing my brain WITH the copy.

On top of that, I decided to find a different way to land clients.

Instead of going outbound and reaching out to people who had no idea who I was…

I looked inwards.

I talked to the people who knew my name….

Not long after I began doing that, I landed my first client – a project that catapulted my growth…

Because by the end of June 2020, I was making $5600 a month, and by the end of 2020, I was traveling the world.
